Cassette Tape Wall Art

Cassette Tape Wall Art

Tattooed Martha - Cassette Tape Wall Art (7)

I am so happy to have this project completed! I drew it up months ago in a notebook and tossed it aside until discovering it just recently. It’s perfect for all those old cassette tapes that you might still have lying around and would make a fun gift for Valentine’s Day using your sweetheart’s favorite song! I had most of the supplies I needed and it took minimal effort to make!

Supplies:

16×20” stretched canvas

Acrylic paint(s)

Paint brush or foam brush

An old cassette tape you don’t mind destroying (sorry Dean Martin!)

Hot glue gun and extra hot glue sticks

-If you don’t have an old cassette tape you can pick one up at the thrift store for 99 cents!-

(1.) Pour out some paint onto your canvas and (2.) paint one layer or a base coat down. I went with a royal blue. (3.) Paint the edges of the canvas as well. (4.) Let it dry for about 30 minutes and then paint on your second coat. You can go with the same color or one in a similar hue. I went with a ‘Tiffany’s Blue’ so the end result looked like turquoise. Let it dry another 30-45 minutes.

(5.) Next run a few lines of hot glue on the back of your cassette tape and press down onto the canvas. Hold for 20-30 seconds. (6.) Next pull out and unwind all of the tape inside. When you get close to the end, put a few dabs of hot glue in the holes that the tape come out of to keep it from unwinding any further to the clear part of the tape. (7.) Now start forming the letters of the word or song title you want to spell out. I went with ‘Smile’ from Dean Martin’s, ‘Powder Your Face With Sunshine’ (Smile! Smile! Smile!) song. Imagine that you’re writing in cursive with the cassette tape. (8.) Put dabs of hot glue down wherever you need to so you can form the letters. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect – It’s meant to look like messy cursive writing!

(9.) Once you’re finished spelling out your word, haphazardly pile some of the tape underneath. Snip off what you don’t want (believe me there will be a ton of leftover!). Place dabs of glue where you need to and stick tape down.

Once you have it styled and glued down to your liking, remove any hot glue strings, and you’re done! See! Not tough at all! Hang it, gift it, and enjoy it!
