No-Sew Scrap Fabric Banner

September 7, 2013

Tattooed Martha - No-Sew Scrap Fabric Banner (10)

With parties and my birthday looming, I thought I would create a simple triangle fabric banner to hang above the bar (thrift store tea-cart turned bar that is) using scrap fabric leftover from other projects. It’s easy, customizable, and you can make them for any event or holiday!

Supplies:

Scrap fabric in assorted colors and patterns (you need at least 1/3 to 1/2 yard of fabric to work with)

Triangle stencil (Google image search: Triangle Template, and look for one you like!) Mine measured 5” by 7”

Chalk

Scissors

Letter stencils

Acrylic paints in assorted colors

Foam stencil brush

Twine or yarn

Fabric glue (my favorite is Unique Stitch, sold at Joann Fabric – I use it for EVERYTHING!)

(1.) Fold your fabric in half and place the base of the triangle (if using an isosceles triangle) at the fold of the fabric. (2.) Trace around using chalk and then cut out. (3.) You should have a diamond shape. Repeat with remaining fabric. (4.) Place stencil on print side of fabric and dab paint on. Carefully remove stencil and set aside fabric to dry. Repeat with remaining pieces.

(5.) While waiting for the paint to dry, measure out the amount of twine or yarn you need. I used 9 feet (108”) of twine so I had plenty of extra on the ends to hang the banner. If you’re unsure of how much you’ll need, just space out your fabric pieces leaving about 3-4 inches in between each one. Unravel your twine and drape it across, leaving extra on the ends, and then just snip off what you need! (6.) Find the middle of your string and find the middle banner letter. Place fabric print side down and lay twine across the crease made in the middle. (7.) Place two dabs of glue directly on the string at each middle point of the diamond. Run a small line down both sides of the triangle and then fold over. (8.) Lightly press edges together to seal and repeat with remaining pieces. I spaced mine 3 inches apart. Allow 15-20 minutes for the glue to dry and then hang it up!

As always I had a little help from Punk! She loves to make a bed out of the fabric I’m using and attack the measuring tape.. very helpful!
