After many requests for “mocktails” and booze-free treats, I bring you a new monthly contributor who will be providing just that. Welcome James Freeman! James is a professional photographer and haunt enthusiast who resides in Lafayette, LA. After years of rich food and healthy libations, James has settled into a healthier, alcohol-free lifestyle. To kick things off he’s presenting an alcohol-free twist on an Old Fashioned!
Take it away James..
Ahhhhh. Nothing wets my whistle like a classic Old Fashioned. My version combines two ingredients to capture the smoky, caramel taste of a great bourbon.
1 oz roasted barley tea
1 oz Torani Bourbon Caramel syrup
3-4 dashes of Aromatic bitters
1 tsp of club soda
2 orange slices
2 maraschino cherries
Orange peel (for garnishing)
Prepare the roasted barley tea as follows: boil two tea bags in 10oz of water for 20 mins. Chill.
A great Old Fashioned is won and lost in the muddling. Yes, muddling. I’ve drank many an Old Fashioned where the ingredients were just slapped together like a fast-food burger.
Respect the beverage man!
Began with a bourbon glass, muddling one orange slice and two cherries in the bottom of the glass. Splash 3-4 drops of bitters.
Add 1 oz of the chilled barley tea and 1 oz of Torani Bourbon Caramel syrup. The Torani doubles for the simple syrup one usually adds to an Old Fashioned.
(Adjust the ration accordingly to achieve the style of bourbon you prefer; sweet vs smoky)
Finish with a splash of club soda.
Give a little stir. Then garnish with the other orange slice and orange peel for your guests.
