Eeny… meeny… miny… OH YEAH. It’s almost time! And if you’re a BIG The Walking Dead fan like I am (insert gratuitous photo of me and Norman Reedus), you’ve been counting the minutes until we arrive at Negan’s bloody decision. So to celebrate in pure TWD fashion, I offer you my version of the Zombie, which we’ll call The Mocking Dead!
Originally created in 1934 by Don the Beachcomber, the Zombie combined multiple rums to achieve a, well, zombie like state of mind. But we’re going to create a version allowing us to keep our wits about us so we can shoot our crossbows. Gotta have Daryl’s back!
(makes 1 drink)
Amoretti Jamaican Rum syrup
Deremara sugar (to make 1 oz of simple syrup)
1 oz. passion fruit juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 oz. fresh lime juice
Dash of Angostura bitters
Pineapple, passion fruit, lime, mint to garnish
In the immortal words of the guru Jack Sparrow, WHY IS THERE NO RUM? Well, today we’re going to create our own!
Amoretti, known for their extracts, has a great line of syrups, including the one I’m using for this recipe – Jamaican Rum.
To achieve different flavors of rum, like Don used in the original recipe, I’ve mixed the rum syrup with different liquids:
1 part rum syrup to 3 parts ginger beer (need 1.5 oz)
1 part rum syrup to 4 parts ginger ale (need 1.5 oz)
(You can add rum extract to increase the flavor and decrease the sweetness.)
Once you have achieved rum nirvana, you will need 3 oz for each drink.
Use the demerara sugar to create a basic simple syrup (I boiled 1 cup water with ½ cup sugar). Add a few drops of rum extract. This unrefined sugar will give the molasses taste of Demerara Rum we’re replacing.
In a shaker, combine 3oz of faux rum, 1 oz demerara syrup, juices and bitters with ice. Shake and strain into a glass, or empty skull, filled with crushed ice.
Use pineapple, passion fruit, lime slice, and mint to garnish. And if you feel goulish, a dash of Maraschino syrup adds a nice splatter, just like Lucille!
It also makes a grave…I mean GREAT party punch!
This drink is guaranteed to bring all the zombies to your yard.
