20 Best Base Coat For Nail Polish (2024 Update)

I received Essie Smooth-E basecoat as a #freeproduct to try for my honest review from #topboxcircle #trytopbox. I had never heard of this basecoat so I was intrigued as it stated it was a ridge filler and would give my nails a smooth finish to apply polish. I use a lot of dark colours especially blue that has a tendency to stain my nails. I did find that with the initial application it gave my nails a matte finish with an almost grippy feel and then I applied my Essie polish in a nice deep blue. It did dry quickly before I applied the polish. I have had the blue nail polish on for a few days and did find my nails chipped almost the next day so that was a little disappointing. The finish was nice and clean looking like a mani should be. I am not overly impressed though. I feel that there are better products on the market.CeeZee39

I absolutely love the entire Essie line, they always have high quality products. It’s my go to for my mani/pedis. The only issues I’ve come across is that my nail polish never lasted a week. Based on the reviews of Rosy Future OPI nail lacquer I was excited and looking forward to receiving my new nail polish. Wow! What a shock it turned out to be. One coat looked good and I should have stopped right there. Thinking it would look even better with two coats I eagerly added a second as it was easy to apply. One coat gave a beautiful sheer iridescent shimmering look. Adding a second coat gave me neon nails that resembled fluorescent lights. I will continue to use the Rosy Future but only one coat. I am disappointed because I think a manicure with two coats of polish lasts longer. But, the look with one coat is acceptable with top coat layers. This polish is not the winner that I expected but at the same time it is not a total loss either. I would recommend the Rosy Future because of its versatility. For those who like a sheer iridescent look it’s a winner. For those who like neon nails it’s also a winner. Enjoy your new nail polish! I absolutely love this top coat. I use it over Color Street Nails, but also for my daughter when she's painting her nails. It extends my manicure to 10 days, at least (I usually get sick of the color first and take it off). Dries very quick and gives a nice shiney coat. I don't usually need to reapply. Gives it a nice gel polish look and I get a ton of compliments all the time. Makes my nails feel much stronger. Definitely recommend. I do keep nail polish thinner though as sometimes it gets too thick in the bottle, so I add a few drops here and there.olena.t

I received this nail polish complimentary from Influenster in exchange for my honest opinion. I read a description of this which called it a "Barbie pink" and was immediately like "ugh great, bright pink!" I'm generally not a fan of pinks, but this one grew on me! I applied two coats of Two Timing the Zones over the OPI Natural Nail Base Coat, finishing it off with the OPI Top Coat. This polish bubbled, even after leaving 40+ minutes between coats, which was annoying! I ended up topping it with Essie's A Cut Above, which made already girly nails *even more* girly, and I actually liked it! This was again topped with another layer of the top coat. The polish chipped on my dominant hand within 3 days. Considering there's three layers on top, with the tips capped, that's pretty annoying! On my non-dominant hand, it chipped within 5. For me, it's not worth the price tag and I want far better longevity regardless of the price tag. It's around £15 in the UK, and I've got £1-2 Kiko polishes that perform better. I have used Seche Vite top coat for years. I recently got a three pack from Amazon and they are awful. I’ve ordered from their store on Amazon several times before and haven’t had this big of an issue. I’ve kind of always had the shrinkage problem with Seche Vite, but now it looks worse (the lines on the side of my nails where you can see where the top coat is on top of the color). Now though it lifts up the nail polish and chips off in sheets. I make sure to not get the top coat on my skin so there isn’t a lot to lift up, but still it lifts up on the sides of my nails and around my cuticles the next day. I’m also getting more chips, again the next day. I don’t know if this is just a batch problem, but I feel like I may stay clear of Seche Vite for a while. I ordered Glisten Glow’s top coat after I read amazing reviews so hopefully that will work out better!kari.w

This top coat really is fast drying, but not only that, it dries to a hard lacquered finish. The best thing about it is that it's meant to be used over still wet nail polish; it's far more convenient to go straight into your top coat than having to wait minutes for each coat to dry down. The only issue this polish has is that it shrinks. You have to be careful to completely cover all areas where polish is with this top coat, because otherwise there will be a line of demarcation where the top coat has shrunk a bit. Not a huge deal, but can be very apparent and annoying if you're doing a plain black crème polish (not fun to have to re-do a nail). That said, once you know that, it's not too difficult to be mindful of covering the entire painted surface. I have turned again and again to Shellac or gel nails, till I finally decided to give the Infinite Shine a go. It’s been 10 days now and my nails still look good, amazing! I was so not expecting this. Obviously it depends on if you look out a bit for your hands and nails, but if you do, yo will definitely last up to 11 days as OPI promises! I found however it did take about 30 min. drying time as opposed to the claimed 15 min., however you’re already good to go after 15min. It’s actually a bit of a pity that a lot of nail salons don’t really promote it as being in between gel and normal nail polish instead of just some other nail polish. This is the ideal kind of polish when you want to take a break from gel nails or just prefer the longer hold, but still have nice nails. Highly recommended!FeliciaM

I used the Infinite Shine base coat and top coat with two different colours on two occasions, waiting the specified time between coats. The colour is quite gloopy and the brush doesn’t feel as good as usual OPI quality. 12 hours after application I looked down to see the polish from my index finger had completely stripped off. No idea how! Within three days the other nails had started to peel and chip. I found this with the other colour I purchased too – really disappointing. I am astounded that this product has received any positive reviews, it's truly awful. I've been using O.P.I products for years and always found them to be consistently good, the normal polishes do seem to last longer than most brands and the colours are fantastic, However, it's a totally different story with these new 'hello kitty infinite shine' colours and duo pack. They literally chipped within one day! The colours themselves don't go on nicely at all, they felt rough and badly applied and the base coat mottled like i had hand cream on which made it go a funny consistency (which I didn't) I took the Blue 'Let Love Sparkle' away with me, but was having to reapply the chips so often, i ended up giving up and taking it off completely and I've only used 'a hush of blush' once as it's just not worth the hassle. I've complained to the company and asked for a full refund as I feel these products are not as they have been advertised, but surprise surprise, I've had absolutely no response.Bobs78

I really think this stuff helps prevent chipping. I have been wearing a regular Essie polish with this Sally Hansen as a top and base coat and am going on 7 days with no chipping. I did wrap the tips with polish and top coat and still experienced shrinking at the tip of the nail which i'm not thrilled about, but no chipping at all! I also did prep my nails and wiping them with rubbing alcohol to aide with the polish sticking and I think it helped! I have used many top coats, most around the $10-12 mark and this one this is my favorite. I have been using this bottle for about 4 months and the consistency has not changed at all. Sometimes to keep them extra shiny, I put on another layer of top coat a few days in, but I did not in the scenario above and am still very happy with the results!amanda.s

This stuff is amazing! I can't believe this doesn't have a 100% rating. I was surprised to see that people said that the OPI Natural Nail Strengthener peeled off soon after they applied it. I have not had that problem at all. It dries very quickly, which makes it easier to add more coats. This has helped my long nails stay strong and healthy looking. I would be devastated when my long nails broke, but now they don't break, thanks to this polish from OPI! This is my holy grail nail product. I have used this product for years because it is a great product. This item can be used as a base and top coat at the price of one item! The price is really good for a 2/1 item and it works amazing. It mades my nail polish last up to two weeks and it protects my nail polish from breaking apart. For the price as well as the functions, I will keep using this product. I've never tried using quick drops so I can't compare this topcoat to those mythical magical liquids but compared to other topcoats, this dries pretty fast. i haven't timed it but the good thing is it also doesn't have the problem where it looks and feels dry but as soon as you touch fabric or something, bam the textures transferred, so that's great. it also dries to a shiny strong-looking finish. I think my nailpolish lasts a bit longer with this topcoat than my other top coat, but it's debatable. with this top coat i think my nails last about a week chip-free but by mid next week they're usually worn and probably cracking (i don't reapply because i don't usually wear nailpolish for long) Works well on non-revlon nailpolishes, doesn't pull your nailpolish up at the edges, they give you a decent amount and it's not thick and gloopy, it's a pretty good all rounder. the only problem i have is the same problem i have with all revlon nailpolishes, which is that i don't want to pay $15.95 for 14.7ml. I've been doing my nails weekly for about 10 years now and this is my favourite top coat of all time. Once, my boyfriend was checking out my fresh red nails and he said, "your nails are so shiny I can see my own reflection on them". HA!! All thanks to this top coat. It's ultra glossy and dries ultra fast. I can do my nails 15 minutes before I leave the house if I know I'm going to use this top coat and be confident my nails won't be ruined. For me, this combo makes nails last chip free for 2 weeks! There is nothing worse than spending hours weekly on designs that only last a few days. It looked flawless at first but the following day is when I started noticing trouble when the tips of my nails were already losing their color underneath and starting to show signs of wear. I know this is bound to happen but I take very god care of my nails and always wear gloves when washing dishes or using hot water for cleaning. Besides that, I thought it was a lovely polish that was super shiny. I also was unimpressed with how long my nails took to dry afterwards. It definitely wasn’t the quickest. Even though I dont necessarily like Sally's products I tend to buy and go with what i know instead of venturing out, I pain that on being a cancer. Last year my nails were in bad shape and I finally took the risk, not because i was brave but because the products I usually got were stole out of. This made my nails hard and felt good. ORLY Bonder is my go-to base coat. It has a bit of grip to it and I always recommend it as something to try if you find your mani chips easily or doesn't last. The tacky finish adheres to your nail polish to help it stick to the nail bed for a longer-wearing manicure. I like the ergonomic/cushioned brush handle of ORLY polishes as well, very comfortable to hold. The brush is a little thinner than I usually like, but for a base coat, it doesn't much matter.aly.s

This is my go-to base coat it makes any nail polish last multiple days longer than what they quote on the bottle. It also doesn't damage your nails upon removal having a rubberized base coat. I have tried so many different ridge fillers, but as far I knew this the best one found. My nail ridges differs on each nail, so I do apply 3 coats and my nails feel smooth and when I apply nail polish it dries smoothly not bumpy. You know your nail polish looks wacky not smooth which causes frustration on my part. Also I am very rough with my hands, but as everything ages so does your nails. I will order again for sureKaruna

Need to apply a really thin coat (which means it will last longer ;). I finished my left hand and then did my right hand, and there were globs of product on the right sides of my nails on my left hand, meaning gravity is a big factor if you use more than just a very minimal amount. Dries relatively quickly. Thanks to whoever posted about having to apply polish after the coat, otherwise the base coat will peel off. Very much looking forward to my polish lasting longer, that's for sure. I love Mavala products and hope this results in stronger, longer nails. Will try and update. UPDATE: I put two coats of a Mavala nail polish, and two days later it peeled. I was able to scratch the polish right off all my nails, leaving bare nails. So I tried putting this product by itself and, indeed, it also is simply peeling right off. Next trial run: put a different brand of polish after this product. 2 coats on clean dry nails lasted nearly 2 weeks! I bought this for my daughter Jessica, she absolutely loves it! It is (for some uncertain reason) very difficult to find vegan and cruelty free white nail polish out of all of the colors offered, (even harder to find the most non-toxic version), so I was pleased to buy this knowing it is the safest out there and is also from a small, local business. The consistency of this is nicely done, not too thin while not too thick, very unlike some of the other nail polish we’ve owned. I am always thrilled to find a new, ecologically conscientious and vegan product and this is one is new to me because I only found it recently after trying several other vegan and hypoallergenic nail polishes. As ecologically conscientious is quite often synonymous with hypoallergenic because the basis of both philosophies is to exclude agitating toxic chemicals I am assured the Karma nail polish will not cause my highly sensitive skin any unnecessary agitation while providing me with a mind soothing manicure to realign my mood and psyche without any ill effects on the environment. As hypoallergenic nail treatment goes Karma is putting out pretty colors which did live up to my expectations, causing no allergic reaction whatsoever which assures me that they are high quality and earth friendly because I have had many serious and minor allergic reactions to the overwhelming majority of beauty products but Karma caused no allergic reaction whatsoever to date. I hope Karma will continue to put out additional varieties of hypoallergenic, non-agitating vegan nail polish and although I do not like any face make up more of these hypoallergenic products for the face such as foundation, blush, eyeliner and mascara would allow my neighbor's child, who likes to do other peoples faces, the opportunity to experiment on me for as long as I have the patience to sit through her detailed attention. The other vegan nail polish I have tried is equal in value to this and I would recommend all the vegan nail polish brands with equal confidence, including Karma, Pacifica and Mineral Fusion. They all last just as long as regular nail polish, have higher quality top coats because they are nonirritating, and a beautiful array of both playful and traditional colors. If I was truly fun filled and free spirited I'd paint every nail with a different color or design; maybe for the next holiday.Jordanna

After hearing the nail art YouTuber KelliMarissa, rave about Orly Bonder. I bought some last week, and wow!!! This base coat is amazing! My polished nails ordinarily chip so easily, but within a few hours of application, chips had already begun, but not this time, with my new Orly Bonder! I'm into Day Five since I polished my nails, and no chips yet! I had given up on finding a base coat that protected from chipping, but I believe I finally found one. I love gorgeous polish, and had given up on buying it because the polish nail tips end up badly chipped by day's end. I usually buy polishes that cost $10 to $16 each, with iridescent flakes (nicorn Skins), holographic toppers, cremes and a lot more unique looks! I'm going to start buying them again! I purchased this product around 1.5 weeks ago along with the Orly Nail Defense Strengthening Protein Treatment(can be applied as basecoat or topcoat), and it is a wonderful product that's affordable and easy to apply. I would like to give directions on how I go about using it, first. I wash my hands and dry them thoroughly. Second using Orly's Bonder as a basecoat I apply a thin even layer to my nails and allow it to dry down for a bit, then apply a 2nd thin even layer and allow it to dry thoroughly. Third after the Bonder has dried thoroughly I apply a thin even layer of whatever color nail lacquer I'm using and allow it to dry thoroughly, now the number of nail lacquer coats used is up to your preference, but I use 2 thin even layers and make sure they're dried thoroughly. Lastly I always top my color with a basecoat that doubles as a topcoat, currently I'm using the Orly Nail Defense Strengthening Protein Treatment as my topcoat, but I apply a thin even layer allowing it to dry thoroughly, then end with a 2nd thin even layer allowing it to dry thoroughly as well. I've had my current polish on for 9 days and it still looks decent, just the corner edges on some of my nails are showing through, so I will apply a thin layer of the base/top coat allow it to thoroughly dry, next apply my nail lacquer color allow it to thoroughly dry, and finish off with another layer of my base/top coat, and I'll get another week of wear before I remove. **I'd like to add that Orly's Bonder Rubberized Basecoat is ONLY meant to be used with nail lacquer and NOT gel polish, and if used with anything other than lacquer it may not perform as good as it should. Also, when using any nail polish you should always use a basecoat before applying your color then once your color has thoroughly dried top it off by using a topcoat, and that'll allow your color to last longer.Kelli89

This is an excellent base coat. It goes on smoothly, fills ridges, self levels, protects my nail from staining, and keeps my polish on longer than other base coats I’ve tried. It works well with Orly products as well as other brands. I definitely recommend keeping a bottle of this around if you like to do your own nails. As with any other Orly products I’ve tried, it just works really well. The scanner came up with a different name, but the name in the title is the correct/ official name of this product. It’s an enamel nail care product in the ABRICOT line that nourishes, whitens and strengthens nails, while adding a beautiful hint of pink (or apricot). It smooths out ridges and imperfections on the nails surface and leaves a subtle shiny finish. It gives nails a natural, elegant look and this is a very pretty light pink color. It will chip or peel if you use it alone, so use two coats and then use a top coat or sometimes I top it with Dior’s Nail Glow for a very pretty effect. It doesn’t have the best ingredients and does have a strong fragrance. I make sure to use a cuticle oil and cream daily to keep nails healthy and don’t wear this all the time. I’ve mostly transitioned to “non toxic” polishes because they are so much better for nail health, but I have so many pretty Dior and Chanel products that I still indulge from time to time. I do recommend this because it’s pretty and elegant, but I wouldn’t wear every week.christine .r

I have many Dior nail polishes, I keep buying them because I love the wide brush. It makes applying them much easier than other brands. I use them with a the Dior base coat abricot and the Dior topcoat. Another thing I like about this brand is these polishes dry faster than many of my other brands (especially the base and top coat). They don't wear much longer than other brands I have. After 3 days the shine has diminished and after 4 days I get serious chipping. My most recent one, Cosmopolite is a beautiful dark cherry burgundy. It is not the purple color shown in the photo. It is a very deep dark rose bordering to a very blue red. If you are familiar with the old classic Revlon nail color "Cherries in the Snow" it is almost identical to that shade. What bugs me is the brush on the Dior polishes do not come down far enough to the bottom of the bottle. This causes you to have to always tip the bottle to get to the last 25% of the polish. I used this nail polish for the first time three days ago and I couldn't be happier with the result! For years I have had acrylic nails and have recently stopped because I don't have time to go and get them done with my new baby, so I decided to invest in some new nail polish and boy am I glad I did! I used the JINsoon Power Coat Strengthening Base Coat, followed by 2 coats of the Essie Light Lilac, then the JINsoon Top Gloss Quick Dry Top Coat, and finished off with the Essie Quick-e Drying Drops Nail Polish Treatment and my nail look AMAZING! They actually look like I've got shellac on. And what's even more amazing, they dried SUPER fast! It took me maybe 10-15 minutes to do the application, and then I let dry for maybe 20-30 minutes and they were completely set. I was able to get dinner ready and do the dishes straight away with no denting or smudging! This is a game changer! I'm now on day three and they still look as good as day 1! I was sick of the colours you would get from OPI or the drugstore that just felt a bit too childish – I love pink and purple but I don’t need my nails to look like a kids bedroom wall. This nail polish is what I’ve been looking for! Subtle and creamy this just looks expensive on and is definitely for that ballerina off duty aesthetic everyone’s into atm. I usually redo my nails weekly – this nail polish last for that time. It does chip after that but I don’t use a base or top coat. It’s better than an OPI in terms of chipping for me! 100% recommend.JL2022

I have used Seche Vite top coat for years. I recently got a three pack from Amazon and they are awful. I’ve ordered from their store on Amazon several times before and haven’t had this big of an issue. I’ve kind of always had the shrinkage problem with Seche Vite, but now it looks worse (the lines on the side of my nails where you can see where the top coat is on top of the color). Now though it lifts up the nail polish and chips off in sheets. I make sure to not get the top coat on my skin so there isn’t a lot to lift up, but still it lifts up on the sides of my nails and around my cuticles the next day. I’m also getting more chips, again the next day. I don’t know if this is just a batch problem, but I feel like I may stay clear of Seche Vite for a while. I ordered Glisten Glow’s top coat after I read amazing reviews so hopefully that will work out better!kari.w

This top coat really is fast drying, but not only that, it dries to a hard lacquered finish. The best thing about it is that it's meant to be used over still wet nail polish; it's far more convenient to go straight into your top coat than having to wait minutes for each coat to dry down. The only issue this polish has is that it shrinks. You have to be careful to completely cover all areas where polish is with this top coat, because otherwise there will be a line of demarcation where the top coat has shrunk a bit. Not a huge deal, but can be very apparent and annoying if you're doing a plain black crème polish (not fun to have to re-do a nail). That said, once you know that, it's not too difficult to be mindful of covering the entire painted surface. I use the Seche Clear base coat combined with the Seche Clear Fast dry top coat. The combination keeps my nails protected, strong, and my manicures last at least a week. I like the width of the brush, it’s just wide enough to cover the nail in 2-3 strokes but not make a mess. The base coat dries pretty quickly so you don’t have to wait long to start applying your polish. I highly recommend Seche products.stevie.m

I love this brand for and I thought that it would be just as good as a base coat. It is just as good and the top coat. It dries quickly and is clear. It makes my nails look so healthy and shiny just by itself. I have used this for a while now and I do think it helps my polish stay on longer. If it didn't – I would skip this step to make polishing faster. It doesn't smell any strong odor when using this base coat. I will buy this again when I run out.
