20 Best Nail Strengthening Polish (2024 Update)

I received Essie Smooth-E basecoat as a #freeproduct to try for my honest review from #topboxcircle #trytopbox. I had never heard of this basecoat so I was intrigued as it stated it was a ridge filler and would give my nails a smooth finish to apply polish. I use a lot of dark colours especially blue that has a tendency to stain my nails. I did find that with the initial application it gave my nails a matte finish with an almost grippy feel and then I applied my Essie polish in a nice deep blue. It did dry quickly before I applied the polish. I have had the blue nail polish on for a few days and did find my nails chipped almost the next day so that was a little disappointing. The finish was nice and clean looking like a mani should be. I am not overly impressed though. I feel that there are better products on the market.CeeZee39

I absolutely love the entire Essie line, they always have high quality products. It’s my go to for my mani/pedis. The only issues I’ve come across is that my nail polish never lasted a week. It would constantly chip off, but since trying out this base coat that Essie brilliantly thought of, I no longer have that issue. Since using this, now my nail polish says on for a week before it starts to chip. I’m extremely pleased and happy with this product. It provides you with the best quality manicures and pedicures. Initially I was a bit skeptical about this product claiming to smooth the ridges in my nails. I recently had acrylic nails taken off and the removal process wrecked havoc on my nails. The surface of my nails were uneven and they were peeling. When I applied the base coat, I noticed that it filled in the weak spots in my nails. When I applied the nail polish on top, my nails felt so smooth. You would not be able to tell that my nails were damaged. I had seen many great reviews and was excited when I got pick for this voxbox. I love the bristle of this mascara. It gives a big glamorous vibes. It can get a little clumpy if you overdo it. I love this product. I have used Nail Tek products for about 20 years, as their nail treatment/therapy products have worked wonders for me. My nail used to never grow. I began using Nail Tek, #2 with the cuticle/nail oil when preparing for my wedding in hopes to grow my own nails. They grew, and became stronger than ever before, less brittle and less prone to breakage. I’ve used nearly all of the Nail Tek treatment line and recommended to many! Only downside is you should apply it almost daily, which makes the clear treatment thicker and harder to apply. I have used Nailtiques Formula 2 for many years. It absolutely improves the strength and look of my nails. The trick is to use it consistently and follow the directions to apply one coat daily. I make one to three applications a week to maintain the results and make sure I always have this on my nails. I don't wear color polish often but Nailtiques works great as a first coat with color polish as the second. If you are just starting out with Nailtiques I would suggest not using colored polish for the first few weeks and just use Nailtiques to give your nails a good start. These are my real nails. I used to wear fake nails and my nails were so Damaged, I needed a change. My nails are strong, long, and better than ever. 10/10 would recommend using this. These products are inexpensive, and you can find them at Walmart and Amazon (amongst others). These products make your nails very strong, and protect them successfully from breaking. I have not had any breakage since I started using them. Previously I used a different nail hardener, but had breakage with that one.

I loved this product. Tbh I have completely ran out cause I used it almost every other day. A little story here so be warned: For 20 years I have struggled with anxiety, well with that I had a nervous habit of picking at my nails till they were in the quick. I’ll attach a picture along with results. I found this product through my mom (a nail technician) plus vegan pure multivitamin nail hardener (also at Walmart) I started using these products every other day. And give or take 2 months in my nails are have grown so long. I have used other products from this brand and have been very disappointed. This one has left me very surprised. I've only used it twice so far, and it seems to work great. Can I say that I've seen growth within 3 days? Honestly, I can't really tell. However, I have noticed a definite change in my nail strength. I work a lot with my hands when I make costumes and clothing, and my nails tend to break, chip and crack. Since I started using this, my nails seem stronger. I only gave this product 4 stars because I haven't been using it for very long, so I can't say if it really lives up to the hype. Not for nail growth, but stops nail peeling/brittle nails. Also great as a top and base coat! Ok so I’ve been trying this for 3 months and I haven’t seen any noticeable difference in nail growth rate. However! I have very brittle nails that break and peel if they get long so I’ve always been on the lookout for something that helps and this works wonders! I keep getting compliments on my nails and how I can actually grow them now. I followed the directions for use as applying 2 coats every 3 days and I haven’t had any problems with peeling or my nails breaking when they get longer. I would suggest also painting underneath the nail tip to strengthen both sides. I would recommend for people with brittle nails, but don’t expect faster nail growth. This nail strengthener has done the unthinkable: salvaged my thin, peeling, damaged nails that I was on the brink of accepting would be stubby forever. I was caught in a cycle of chewing them in times of stress, getting acrylics to cover up the issue, removing them and starting all over. My nails were put through the ringer. My goodness, what this has done for my nails is unreal! As soon as we went in “lockdown” mode, I needed my Dip mani ASAP. This brand is my go-to nail polish. I love that the bottles aren't obnoxiously huge and I can travel with them. They are also made of thick glass and I have dropped them on numerous occasions and no catastrophe of nail polish on my floors. Could you imagine? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this nail hardener. It keeps my nails super protected – they're prone to break and they haven't broken since I started using it. It adds a shine that makes my nails look like gel nails, which I love because gel manicures just destroy my nails. However, the shine is not very long lasting but I usually apply a coat whenever my polish is looking dull and it dries in 1 minute, which is so much more time-conscious than going to a salon to get a high-shine finish or just redoing my nails entirely. It also keeps the polish from chipping, and it's not one of those hardeners that cracks after 2 or 3 days. I seriously love this product. I do like the way this looks on my nails. It looks thicker on the nail than other top coats. However, you have to be like Goldilocks with application and use an amount that’s just right. If you use too much- your nails will never dry! Or you’ll think they are dry and then end up with a “dent” in one of them the next day. You must follow the instructions! I thought I knew how to paint my nails, already… but this is a bit different. I gave it 3 stars because of the price. You pay a lot of money for such a tiny bottle. I knew that before I bought it, but I just had to have it! Although it looked nice on, I’m in no hurry to make a second purchase because it takes so long to get it just right on my nails. This product is really good at rebuilding nail strength when used as directed. Although it may be temping to peel off the product after applying several coats, I encourage you not to do this as it will also remove part of the strengthened nail bed that you are trying to repair. Soak your nails in non-acetone polish remover initially, then rub off remaining product with a saturated cotton ball. Once clean, reapply.KathyC

Having been a nail biter/picker most of my years I resorted to acrylics to help deter me. Getting this done regularly made my already thin and brittle nails worse. I resorted to false nails for a while and then wraps to try and achieve some length to discourage my old habits. Had been looking for an alternative product in local shops but couldn't find it. A work colleague was using product I was originally trying to source and recommended it all apart from the pinkish tinge it gave. A local beauty store recommended this range that they had in stock as an alternative. Was so glad I purchased. i cant say enough good things about opi. i use so many of their products. this product is a 3 in 1. it works as a base coat, a top coat, and a strengthening formula. it’s clear, but it looks so good on the nail. it’s strengthens my nails really well. and it’s easy to apply other coats to it if you want. or stickers. would definitely recommend!jennifer.f

I absolutely love OPI polishes especially the brush they come with. But I have to say it, this product IS TERRIBLE! I rarely write negative reviews, but this one gets an exception. It never fully sets, so it smudges and I wake up with sheet marks. I have given this topcoat 5 different tries, thinking it must've been user error. The last time I tried it was an experiment to make sure it's the topcoat and not my polish. One hand was painted with 3 coats of polish with no topcoat, the other hand was 2 coats polish, one very thin coat of topcoat. Both sides used the OPI drying drops, then I sat still without touching anything for 4 hours before bed. I woke up the next morning to find the no topcoat side perfect, the topcoat side was smudged on every finger. It's unequivocally this topcoat. I'm disappointed and surprised that OPI would make and distribute such a sub-par product. Probably going to switch to a gel topcoat from here.aleksandra.s

I'm only on week 3 of the process, which is a month long, but so far I've absolutely loved this nail strengthener! I've tried tons of other nail strengtheners, including a $25 one, and this is the best one I've used so far. It doesn't tint the tips of your nails or turn them yellow, and it has a very natural sheen–not too glossy. My nails are stronger than they've ever been. I have only chipped a nail once, and that was at my job during the first week of using this strengthener (I work a pretty hands on, physical job). Since then, I haven't broken or chipped a single nail. I plan on continuing to wear this as a base coat or just naturally on my nails once I'm done with the month. Long ago I gave up on my nails, trying to just handle them short to curtail their peeling and splitting tendencies. Last march I had a shellac mani to be fancy for a wedding and it ruined my already quite pathetic nails. After several months of trying to grow out a vertical split that had resulted I searched for something that would strengthen them enough to at least get back to normal shorties. Well, I saw this product and the reviews and thought i would give it a try. I did follow directions to the letter, which helped and it was at a vacation time for me so I could stay on track. After the first two weeks I had never seen my nails so 'non splitty' , and something in this is definitely fortifying them. After the initial two weeks I went into the 2 week every other day schedule, and I went ahead and purchased the soy remover as well. Pros: much 'cleaner' product line than any I see. Virtually no odor or strong smell, makes application pleasant. Products work better than any I ever used on my mid 50's nails! Cons: none yet, and I just ordered from the Labor day sale. Okay, this color is the CUTEST color of them all. This polish is thick and very pigmented rather than the regular essie nail polishes. This one strengthens your nails super well too! I had acrylics for 2 weeks then took them off and my nail beds were thin and very bad (dry/brittle) but after I used this nail polish for a week and after taking the polish off my nails were thicker and also hydrated!! I definitely LOVE this polish and recommend it for anyone who wears acrylics/gel nails a lot!! It's a great treatment to get your nails back in shape. When I took my old nail polish off this week my nails were peeling, which has never happened to me before. I sought out this product after trying 2 different brands “repairing” polish that were pretty terrible. At the store, there were two bottles labeled Minimally Modest but they were noticeably different, even after I shook them. I chose the one that was more pink vs. peach. I applied two coats and it looked pretty at first, but in daylight it’s really streaky. I think the streaks would be filled with three coats but the color would have been too light and opaque for a sheer polish. The formula seems smooth, feels good on my nails, and is long wearing, so I came here looking for another color. I’ll give it one more try and hope for better results.EvaE1izabeth

I had been curious about this product for a while, and when I found it marked down from it's original $10 price tag, I figured I'd give it a go. It's supposed to help dry, brittle nails in a week's time. I'm not sure about that. Essie has never been a brand that performs like a champ for me. It's okay, but I've always had better results from cheaper brands like Sinful Colors or comparable brands (price-wise) like Orly or OPI. Essie has come to be a brand that will get my attention, but I'll be looking at Sinful Colors, Orly and OPI first, and then I'll see what Essie has to offer. I like that this is a base coat that can be worn alone and it's supposed to have brightening pigments, kind of like a BB cream, but for nails. As something akin to a BB cream, it's pretty good. Just one coat and my nails look brighter and a bit healthier. Two coats, and even more so. With the second coat, the pearliness comes out and in some lighting my nails look a bit like the inside of a seashell, for what that's worth. It's subtle, though, so I like it for low-key polish.The contents are faintly lavender with a tiny hint of pearl to them, doing a nice job of concealing yellowing due to wearing nail polish most of the time. It actually makes a better difference on my nails than some other pale/sheer/pearl nail polishes, and it is a much nicer result than some other brands' sheer tinted polishes which I've tried in years past. This is basically what I was hoping for in a sheer, tinted product, so I'm very pleased with it. I don't even care if it strengthens my nails or makes them less brittle (it would be a nice occurrence, however, if it did) but I like that this makes my naked nails look nicer and I can easily apply one coat in a hurry for prettier nails on the fly. (Dry time is okay; it's pretty speedy for a single coat, but a second coat stays a bit tacky for slightly longer than I'd like.) Since it's a basecoat, I know it will at least make my nails somewhat less likely to chip. I got the pink tinted nail strengthener and at first really liked it. I decided to wear it on its own, and that was a mistake. In less than a day the polish would chip and flake off. It has absolutely not durability. I’ve removed it, tried prepping my nails, and reapplied it but still had the same problem. I wonder if this would be better under another nail polish, which is why I’m giving it three stars instead of two. I assume those who give this product 5 stars are wearing this underneath another polish and maybe that’s why it works for them. I was pleasantly surprised with how well this product works. I couldn’t believe the amount of growth my nails had made within just 3 days…not to mention they strengthened up a lot. My nails have been a little more brittle lately and this has helped tremendously! Plus, you get the added benefits of a smooth, shiny, pink-tinted nail while they are becoming stronger. It says to take the stuff off after 3 days but you can leave it with no consequences. You can instantly feel the protection added and see a pretty shine. I don’t know that I’d say you can instantly feel them becoming stronger, but you can definitely tell it’s doing it’s job and will be more resistant to stuff within the 3-day period. It doesn’t take much either (just two coats per nail), so one bottle will last you a good amount of time. You get a good amount for your money. Well worth it! Would definitely recommend. In the bottle this has a purple tint which is not noticeable once applied, it goes on completely clear. Instructions say to apply two layers and that's it. The product is a lot thinner than regular nail polish, so you need to make sure you are not picking up too much product! If you do accidentally apply too much it runs quick since it is so thin, and you need to remove it with the brush o make sure it does not spill over onto your skin. Other than that small issue it seems to work, my nails do look better and feel a little tougher. Best part is it just looks like a nice clear polish that gives your nails a lovely shine!Janaa

The whites of my nail tips started growing back within 48 hours! I’ve slaughtered my nails after using press-on nails with nail glue and salon gel manicures, but it was a stupid habit to get into because I have lovely, long, strong, and white-tipped nails naturally. After the damage, they definitely needed a little help being pushed in the right direction, and Nail Tek’s #2 has been a lifesaver! I was given this polish to restore my nails after having a gel manicure for years. I stopped for covid19, as I couldn’t justify the salon trips with a high health risk person in my household. Sadly, I was forced to let my beautifully appointed gel nail manicure grow out and disappear. Of course what I was left with was entirely awful destroyed nails. It took me weeks to finally get it in the mail, but I really like this product. My nails are badly damaged from gels and acrylics. The pink color is ok but would not be my choice. It does let me see where it has worn off on the edges more easily though. My nails are easily broken and thin to begin with, so damaged they are very fragile. This is good for growing them out, and having some color helps hide the damage. I would like a shimmery nude color better, but that is personal preference.Merry B.

This is the Orly Nailtrition treatment polish and it retails for $15 at Ulta. This is suppose to be a nail strengthener for peeling and splitting nails. The formula is thick, shiny, and pink. I was hoping for something more clear. Not a deal breaker. It makes the nails appear bright and shiny. I recently wanted to take a break from getting my nails done and had the acrylic removed. My nails were peeling and thin underneath. I thought I would give this product a try and after a month, I’m really not impressed. It did not make my nails any stronger, nor did it help them grow. I really did not have any expectations of this product when I first started using it but figured it was worth a shot. I had acrylics for over a decade and then had to stop during the pandemic. My natural nails were so damaged, brittle and peeling, I had given up the idea of having nice nails again. I thought the Nailtrition at best would bind the peeling nails and prevent them from splitting but my nails are growing so well and (knock on wood) haven’t broken or split since I’ve started using this. When I was seven or so years old, I slammed my right thumbnail in a car door. My nail was allowed to heal on its own– which was not great. The nail has a big bump or two, right in the center of the nailbed and has always caught on fabric or provided an irresistible object to mess with or (better word) aggravate. In my later years, I began to try nail stickers, filing and super glue. The stickers and glue, only made the nail more snaggy and the filing made it thinner — no good results. Then … I stumble upon this product after browsing a scientific article about how the combination of the two main ingredients, showed much promise. After two weeks of applying it about 3 times a day, my thumbnail is nearly unrecognizable. I'm guessing these ingredients have moisturized the nail and bed. The whites of my nail tips started growing back within 48 hours! I’ve slaughtered my nails after using press-on nails with nail glue and salon gel manicures, but it was a stupid habit to get into because I have lovely, long, strong, and white-tipped nails naturally. I do a lot in my life, I'm a mom, I do dishes, laundry, gardening, crafts, etc. My hands get VERY dirty, so I have to wash them probably 20+ times a day, and it makes my my nails get so weak and brittle and they've always been prone to chipping, breaking, etc. but this stuff is so good at sealing the nail with a nice shiny coat! It glides on easily, and dries pretty fast. I've done multiple thin layers and one thick layer and both have worked well. My nails have been bothering me so much that I've had nail hardener on my shopping list for a while now since my nails kept breaking and chipping, but then this came in my mailbox! I mean, it really makes a difference when you see how flexible your nail was before vs. after applying. After having this on for a week, I went to do the dishes and jammed my thumb on the sink handle, and already was reaching for the nail file because I thought my nail broke for SURE! But nope! it held up with this stuff on! I also notice my nails don't get as thin and weak when they sit in water for a while with this stuff, but of course it wears the coat down when you swim or have wet hands for long periods of time. I'm planning on getting another bottle to use on my feet after showers because my toe nails could use some help with cracking too! I definitely recommend this if you've never tried a Sally Hansen strengthener!jamie.r

I absolutely loved this Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails Strengthener. The bottle recommends 2 coats so I did just that. The clear coats gave my nails so much shine they were absolutely beautiful. My nails grow pretty well but easily break on the simplest things. After using the Sally Hansen Strengthener my nails for the first time in a long time have all had the chance to be about the same length because they are now harder thanks to this polish. I would definitely recommend this to anyone having a hard time with thin nails or nails that easily break, you won't be disappointed.tammara.m

I’ll start this review by saying I have weak nails. The simple act of opening a jar or a window is enough to chip them, the thumb and index nails especially prone to breakage. The wonky line on my thumbnail (see attached pic) is due to a kitchen window. When I tried ventilating the kitchen, a crescent moon shape tore off my thumbnail like a fedora man tipping his hat “M’lady” over and over. Had to clip the split end and grow the rest out, since trimming it smooth wasn’t feasible at the time. This is the first time in two months I’ve painted my nails. The strengthener is giving me much better luck in keeping my nails intact and kitchen ventilated, so thank you. Haven’t had a nail accident in the last week-and-a-half I’ve used this stuff. This dries pretty fast, but not any faster than other strengtheners I’ve used. Consistency feels a tad watery and slick. My polish is lasting at least a few days longer than it did before, so this works as a decent base coat too. Good product. Sally Hansen’s a solid brand, so no surprises there. Instructions say “2-3 coats,” but I don’t believe you need that much. One coat was enough for me.sena.m

I really like this product it definitely does its job and quite beautifully. This item in particular has helped rejuvenate my nails and surrounding. It is easy to use but a little pricey I would definitely recommend this product to others without a doubt!lillian.g

I love this NAIL TEK #1. Previously I had used #4 to improve my weak nails. It did a tremendous job improving the ridges, splits, lumps & bumps in my nails, that I moved on to #1. It works perfectly as a base coat for polish and as a top coat and the polish stays on without chipping or peeling for longer than any others I’ve tried.Linda O.

I have been using this product for 3 1/2 weeks and I can tell you that the good and bad reviews are accurate. My nails are as thin and brittle as paper and tear just as easily. I followed the directions of the polish to the T and yes, it does work. My nails are growing and are longer then they would ever be without this product. I apply a new layer every other day but once you get to the end of the week, having multiple layers on, does cause the polish to peel but you're removing it the next day to restart the process so it wasn't a big deal to me. When the polish is off, my nails do not feel stronger on their own but maybe that will change with continued use. For the first two weeks I did not use any other polish on my nails but by week three I was curious if this would work with another polish so I did a French manicure, only one layer of white on my nails w/o base coat, and applied the straightener on top and went about the week applying a new coat every other day and it's worked great!! It's too early to say of this is a long term cure for my brittle nails but it looks hopeful.Sarah

I followed instructions to use this product because I was desperate about my nails. They really need help. But this product is not working. It wore off after wearing gloves the first time. During this time of the virus I work gloves to grocer store. i took them off and the treatment had worn off on several nails. I applied again. Then did housework wearing gloves to protect nails and hands. Once again the treatment wore off. Not sure how I get a refund since I ordered online from Ulta and our local store is closed. I am VERY disappointed with this product.Pinky
