20 Best No Chip Nail Polish Top Coat (2024 Update)

I'm a latecomer to this particular polish, though I've known about it for years. I have a couple other polishes from the same China Glaze collection, in fact. The reason I turned up my nose at this polish is I already had experienced the Sally Hansen Gem Crush "Glitz Gal" which is a very close dupe of this one, and I'm mediocre on that one for a variety of reasons (mostly the formula). Then I grabbed a bottle of this on a whim (and on sale) to see if it really is that similar to the Sally Hansen and it is, but this one is actually the better of the two. I do see a difference in the suspension and quality of the glitter, although they are very alike (similar enough to call them dupes). I'm not going to turn this review into a comparison, but I wanted to give a bit of background. This is a charcoal grey base with fine to medium, super sparkly prismatic (holo) glitter. The first coat is thin and patchy, but the second coat will make it opaque or near enough to it. It dries down with a strangely dull surface (weird, given how much glitter is in this), and has a gritty, textured feel. This is a polish that very much benefits from top coat to bring out the shine, and top coat also cuts some of the gritty feel. To get this polish completely smooth, you can put on a coat of clear polish or thick top coat and then a quick dry top coat on top of that, and it will smooth out most of it (though the extra top coat will make removal just that much more annoying). I think this works best as a single, carefully applied coat over a base of dark grey or black. You get the glittery goodness that way, but less grit and it's overall less bulky. Two coats of this is fairly thick and may contribute to chipping for some people (I don't have any particular issues with that, but judging by the reviews, some people do). Removal is pretty much exactly what you'd expect for a full-cover, opaque glitter. I never wear this any more without a peel-off base coat, which makes everything so much easier when it comes time to take it all off (I do know that peel-off base coats have their issues and not everyone is happy with them; in that case I recommend the foil-and-acetone-cotton-ball method of removal). I can say I'm happy I gave in to my whim to buy this. I definitely like it, and will undoubtedly get plenty of wear out of it.turnthisaround

China Glaze is hands down the best for nail polishes but especially as a top coat to provide that shiny protection that a top coat does. I've been using this top coat exclusively for several years now since I was introduced to it from a friend. Not only does my painted nails last longer but they are incredibly shiny and much lovelier than if I were wearing no top coat at all! China Glaze is where it's at for top coat!!kara .l

I used this nail polish for the first time three days ago and I couldn't be happier with the result! For years I have had acrylic nails and have recently stopped because I don't have time to go and get them done with my new baby, so I decided to invest in some new nail polish and boy am I glad I did! I used the JINsoon Power Coat Strengthening Base Coat, followed by 2 coats of the Essie Light Lilac, then the JINsoon Top Gloss Quick Dry Top Coat, and finished off with the Essie Quick-e Drying Drops Nail Polish Treatment and my nail look AMAZING! They actually look like I've got shellac on. And what's even more amazing, they dried SUPER fast! It took me maybe 10-15 minutes to do the application, and then I let dry for maybe 20-30 minutes and they were completely set. I was able to get dinner ready and do the dishes straight away with no denting or smudging! This is a game changer! I'm now on day three and they still look as good as day 1! When it comes to nail polish, I tend to be quite skeptical especially since gel is a go-to. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this Essie polish due to its color, application and wear. In terms of color, this shade looks great with one coat or multiple depending on the look youre going for. And since it has a nice shimmer to it, it doesnt show imperfections or chips either. I love natural colors, so this one was an A+ for me. Because you can really build up the opacity of this polish, this made applying it really easy with three main swipes across the nail. And due to the shimmer, its really forgiving even if you do make a mistake. The brush was also quite flat and wide, which helped with the application process. (Drying time was quite short especially if you do thin layers). This polish was also great in terms of wear and is still holding up well after a good week of wearing it. Granted I did apply a topcoat, this still held up through housework and doing dishes by hand. In all, Im a big fan of this shade of Essie polish and think it would be perfect year round if not an easy to upkeep color in the summer months on my fingers and toes.AleksandraM

I am obsessed with Essie, that’s all I have bought since 10 years ago. I have tried Tuck it in my Tux and few others and decided Marshmallow has the best hue!!!! I love the color, not too white not pink, just right. The formula however is horrible. The first couple of times after opening the bottle is great except in order not to get streaks you have to apply 3 coats. After a few days of opening the bottle, the formula gets thick and clumpy and not usable!!! Also, the mandatory 3 layers make the nail polish to peel off in a day or two because it’s simply two thick and rubber feel like almost. Please note this is a constructive review for Essie, I am asking you to please change this formula since I love your products. I would love others to enjoy this wonderful nail polish but at this stage I am not able to use this color anymore. I don’t like anything with sparkle or shine and neither one of your colors mimic marshmallows. The open bottles show the clumps on top. Unfortunately my video would not upload. I purchased this myself as it was readily available at my local drugstore. I’m an active mom of three and I’m tough on nail polish, sometimes it chips on day one. This does help prolong the nail polish on my fingernails, although still I will inevitably chip a nail in a day or two. On my toenails though, this top coat will last weeks. I’m all about painting my toenail because…feet…ugh, but my fingernails I won’t do as often because it makes me mad when they chip after all that work. lolcarey.c

This is a gorgeous, totally unique peachy pink, but it never seems to fully dry. Just 24 hours later, it smudges, scrapes, and chips easily. And this is a fresh, new bottle! I'm annoyed. The formula is somewhat thick, opaque and streaky. Pooling at the cuticles can be a problem because it is a bit drippy, so you have to be pretty careful. Furthermore, it tends to bubble as it dries. Application was frustrating. Making smooth, even strokes on long nails was difficult. It needed three or four coats to level out the streaks. I cut my nails short a week later and tried this polish again. On short nails, it was much easier to get smooth, even strokes with less streaking. This time I only needed three coats. This polish was not worth the hassle to apply to long nails. Since it takes so long to dry, I waited at least an hour between coats. This is an unreasonable amount of time to have to wait to recoat. This polish requires three or four coats to look good and really pop, and waiting so long between coats made for an excruciatingly long process. When several nails smudged the next day and a few chipped, I was super disappointed. The color is pretty, but it's all for naught since it never dries and is therefore unwearable. Bummer. EDIT: A dupe for this color is China Glaze Pink of Me, which I haven't tried yet. The closest color I have in my collection is Orly Prelude to a Kiss. While less pink, it offers easy, fast, flawless, streak-free application that dries quickly and looks like a pro manicure. Orly Prelude to a Kiss has the best brush and formula I've used in a long, long time. I highly recommend it.ihatespots

I love the Essie No Chips Ahead Top Coat! I have been using this brand and particular product for years. My nail polish last for sooooo long with this top coat. I have nothing bad to say about this product. I totally recommend this product !!!!!juliette.m

For the most part, I really like this product! Realistically, a little goes a long way, but I'd probably repurchase this after its run out. My manicure still risks peeling off in the shower if I'm not careful, which is why I shaved off a star, but it totally works as a decent top coat. The Gel Genius Base Coat is a genius but more importantly is that it works. I own the other two base coats and honestly they are a genius as well. I switched between them depending upon what I think my nails need. You can’t go wrong with any of them. LONDONTOWN makes it easy. Their description of each product does what it says. The only reason this gel polish doesn't get a 5 star is because it is an absolute pain to get off. I can soak it and soak it for what seems like hours and I still have to file it off or scrape with an orange stick. The colours are beautiful, it is easy to apply for a beginner and it doesnt pool at the edges of your nail. Another great bonus is that the top coat does not require alcohol wiping, so for those with tight c curved nails, like me, you get much better coverage and top coat seal!kayla.m

I recently started doing my own gel nails at home and I love this top coat. It is no wipe so you do not have a sticky residue left over. I will always recommend to friends! At home gel nails are the way to go. I have weaker nails and this helps strengthen them without the salon price.mckenna.d

Who knows when their overhead mechanism was made. I had the manual and that was no help. So the hardest part was finding the correct setup code [which I then wrote down]. But it does just exactly what it is supposed to do. But do keep your manual. Sometimes a power outage will require a reset. This gel-setter top coat really shines! It takes my nails to a new level and makes the color pop. I naturally have ridges in my nails and this top coat makes my nail beds perfectly smooth. The formula looks thick but it’s really not. I paint two coats of my nail color, then one coat of this gel-setter top coat. It dries super fast and is strong. I am so disappointed I spent any money on this. I figured I would give it a try because I like the polish as a whole and I wanted to give my nails a break after having the professional done. After less than 24 they are chipped and peeling like crazy. I figured with the “gel like finish” it would be sturdy then everyday activities. I received this gel setter in hopes of it doing a better job at keeping my color from chipping. Within 3 days it has started to chip other than the short life, it is a amazing setter! For it to be gel it does set very quickly. Within a minute it was completely dry and non tacky. It doesn’t leave a lingering smell like the off brand gels so either. It’s shine is fantastic! I also find that I don’t get tip wear when using this top coat. It is compatible with all of my nail polishes (mostly OPI and Essie with some SinfulColors and Essence). i cant say enough good things about opi. i use so many of their products. this product is a 3 in 1. it works as a base coat, a top coat, and a strengthening formula. it’s clear, but it looks so good on the nail. it’s strengthens my nails really well. and it’s easy to apply other coats to it if you want. or stickers. would definitely recommend!jennifer.f

Sorry but, I'm not as generous with the stars on this as everyone else. Yes, it does go on matte as many others have said, but should it get 3 stars just because it's only able to do that?! A top coat isn't just for looks/aesthetics but also function, it's supposed to protect the color and aide in lasting/durability. I've painted my nails since I was a child and I'm in my early 30's so I've used a fair amount of brands and colors, never have I ever seen a top coat lift color from a dried nail; I thought the issue was that I used a black of a different brand so maybe it was the mismatch, so I went and bought an OPI black and it did the same thing. Even more, it doesn't matter how long you let it dry the first day you practically can't do much because it will smudge or lift in someway, even if you touch it and it seems dry…so this isn't something that you can do when pressed for time. Then, another weird thing about this top coat, is the fact that it doesn't really chip off, but rather, it rubs off or even washes off. Overall, this is a huge miss and major disappointment given that it's OPI! I'm harsh in my review because it's OPI and we have come to expect a certain level from them which is why many of us are willing to pay more for it; however, this performs worse than the old wet n wild polishes, Revlon, or those little bottles of polishes that were super cheap (can't remember name). Basically, this isn't something I will purchase again from them and I am highly suggesting to anyone reading the reviews prior to buying to look elsewhere this isn't worth it, trust me.Not impressed OPI fan

I have used Seche Vite top coat for years. I recently got a three pack from Amazon and they are awful. I’ve ordered from their store on Amazon several times before and haven’t had this big of an issue. I’ve kind of always had the shrinkage problem with Seche Vite, but now it looks worse (the lines on the side of my nails where you can see where the top coat is on top of the color). Now though it lifts up the nail polish and chips off in sheets. I make sure to not get the top coat on my skin so there isn’t a lot to lift up, but still it lifts up on the sides of my nails and around my cuticles the next day. I’m also getting more chips, again the next day. I don’t know if this is just a batch problem, but I feel like I may stay clear of Seche Vite for a while. I ordered Glisten Glow’s top coat after I read amazing reviews so hopefully that will work out better!kari.w

This top coat really is fast drying, but not only that, it dries to a hard lacquered finish. The best thing about it is that it's meant to be used over still wet nail polish; it's far more convenient to go straight into your top coat than having to wait minutes for each coat to dry down. The only issue this polish has is that it shrinks. You have to be careful to completely cover all areas where polish is with this top coat, because otherwise there will be a line of demarcation where the top coat has shrunk a bit. Not a huge deal, but can be very apparent and annoying if you're doing a plain black crème polish (not fun to have to re-do a nail). That said, once you know that, it's not too difficult to be mindful of covering the entire painted surface. Make sure to paint your nails in a well lit room! is one of the best, widely available quick drying top coats with a rock hard, long lasting finish.mercedes.h

Ho Ho holy moly! This is an AMAZING polish! Most glitter polishes (which is the version I’m reviewing) smear when you put them on or don’t show up at all. This Deep Sea Diamonds polish shows up and then some! It not only has small glitter but bigger pieces as well which makes it super sparkly! I’m wearing it over a darker color but you can definitely wear this on its own. Two coats is all you need but you can get away with one. The formulation is on the thicker side which helps keep the glitter in tact. Add a quick dry top coat and you’re done! Highly recommend! If you follow me, I’d like to first say thank you so much! It’s also lasted longer than any of the other expensive polish brands I own (all the ones that promise no chips for two weeks and then they chip next day no matter how careful you are). I’ve gotten a bit less than a week’s wear out of it, but even now it’s only a couple chips on a few fingers, which is to be expected because I’m a mom of young kids, so I am constantly doing something with my hands and washing them. I see other reviewers mentioning how sheer applications are, which is true, but it just means you need a couple extra coats, which honestly isn’t a big deal; I find that most polishes, no matter how much coverage they give you, need additional coats anyways. Dries quickly, so apply quickly and carefully. This is a great middle ground between regular polish and real gel, meaning it is great for home use. You can get thick coverege that hides your ridges without needing to buff your nails if you do 2 color and 1 top coat. I'm in the process of replacing all my existing polishes with Miracle Gel versions.LH

I am not one to leave a review. I am a long time nail salon junkie and finally decided to "do my own" . I have done the dip and gel polish at home for a few years now and hate the time consumption of the dip and gel keep up. So I have decided to try another route again. I am now relishing in my natural nail beauty and have found this product to be a life saver! I start with an OPI Nail Envy nail strengthener, and then any polish of my choice, I currently am using OPI brand. I then seal with Big Dry top coat from Sally Hansen. This dries really fast. I then use the SALLY HANSEN MIRACLE GEL TOP COAT, it dries in about 5 minutes, and then I add one more coat of the Big Dry top coat.. and PERFECT AND LONG LASTING RESULTS! All I can say is I think it dries faster if you use the big dry top coat prior to just putting it directly onto the polish. Other than that this is fabulous and I will keep using this product with every polish change etc… LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!Amanda Cain

I've used Revlon Nail Enamel more years than I care to admit. this has always been my "go to" polish, in shade Serene (320) for work and :play:, Once in a while I'd lighten the shade up i the summer, but always back to the favorite. No, apparently it's been discontinued and what's left around is way too expensive to even think about buying. The biggest thing I love about this polish is it didn't destroy my nails. After taking the polish off, my nails weren't dry, brittle, chipping and didn't break as much when kept polished. Tried the gel nails once, took me months to get my nails re-grown, needless to say, I went right back to a lite shade of the enamel, then back to Serene. Won't make that mistake again. Question is, what shade will work as well as that, have Totally Toffee, but it's a bit darker and I absolutely don't do pinks or weird color. Am a porcelain skinned strawberry blonde with green eyes and reds/pinks look horrible on me. Any color with a gray overtone makes my nails look like they are dead. So, unless I can talk Revlon into bringing back that particular color, anyone have any ideas on shades along that line?Gigi

I ordered the matte top coat nail polish being that I have purchased other brands before. The first day of use it looked great but day two theres steaky, cracked looking lines going down my nail. I tried it multiple times and same out come. Indont recommendJennifer

I really love this polish. Beautiful colors. I really like 276 Vivacious. The color really lasts. I get 2 weeks of non chip wear. I use a base coat. This polish. 2 coats. Then I go over it with a coat of Revlons Gel Envy. It hold up extremely well. I am really pleased with this polish.Neil

This base coat is effective, but average. It does what it is meant to do, which is create a protective layer between your nails and nail polish. This base coat does not prevent nails from yellowing, which is caused by nail polish, especially dark colours, from staining your nails. It also does not fill ridges and create a flat and smooth surface for nail polish, like or similar products. This product can also be used as a top coat. This polish is nothing special as a top coat. It does not prevent nails from chipping. It also does not create a high shine finish. There are better base and top coats available and I recommend buying one of those.stephanie.w

Revlon Multicare Base Top Coat comes in a 14.7 ml glass bottle. I don't use nailpolish that often but when I do I like to protect my nails and make my manicure last longer. For years I've been very happy with my Sally Hansen top coat but I've been unable to buy any for a while and I've tried various ones but nothing I'm happy with. The search is over. For the £2 I paid I feel like a criminal. It's almost gel like in formula, super quick to apply and as it says on the bottle, it's quick dry too. I've noticed a significant difference in how long my polish lasts, I've gotten over a week with a Essie one that usually lasted three days max. It's stayed clear even though I've used it on very dark polishes. I've stocked up on this as I'm guessing because I found it in a discount store, it's been discontinued.laura.m

I have been using this top coat forever and thought I was just awful at doing nails. But nope, it's this top coat! It does NOT dry. Hours later I will touch something get a wet looking imprint on my nail or have a part completely smear off. I'm not even heavy handed with this stuff and it's awful. My nails don't even last a full day with this top coat, they immediately look bad and start pulling the paint off dry nails.Brittany

This polish does take a long time to dry/cure (being in the cold helps,) but once it does, its staying power is amazing. I use it as a top coat for my nails, but I also paint it on the tips of my kids’ hockey sticks and skis to keep them from chipping and splitting. No joke, it is the best product I have found for this “off-brand” purpose. It bonds great to these laminated surfaces, to other glues/fillers/adhesives (we sometimes fill in big ruts with epoxy,) and to fingernails, of course, and something about the acrylic in the formula must give it just enough flex to stand up to the abuse these pieces of athletic equipment sustain on a continuous basis. I will say that if you try to apply a second coat of this the brush does tend to get caught on the first coat and drag a bit, so for manicures I would stick to one coat, and to load the brush up generously when applying so you get a nice, clean stroke every time. 🙂April

the top coat dries quickly, and my polish didn't chip while using it – the edges of the tips seem to just push back instead of chipping. HOWEVER for some reason, I always find tiny holes in my nail polish that grow over time when I use this top coat. I've noticed it with different colors and formulas now, including a shimmery sally hansen argan oil polish, a pink olive and june polish, and the one coat black holo taco polish. the top coat dries with little bumps, which eventually turn into tiny holes (needle to toothpick sized) that burn through the polish, and I can see down to my natural nail bed through). at first I thought it might just be a weird reaction to specific polish combinations, but now i'm giving up and tossing this bottle.bri

This is certainly a handy all-in-one product that can be used as a base coat, top coat, fill-in, and nail protectant. I typically do gel or dip on my nails because they are very brittle and prone to flaking. I apply this product over my 1+ week old dip nails to give them extra shine. This product has a lovely, moisturizing gel-like texture that gives a wonderful shine. However, because it has a thicker, more moisturizing consistency, it takes a very long time to dry so would probably not be ideal as a top coat for regular nail polish. If you don’t touch it at all, the finish is beautiful, but even if you accidentally touch it hours later before it has fully dried, the finish can become texturized and dull. I think this is best used as a nail protectant over natural nails or over acrylic/dip/gel. It is super easy to apply with a generous large brush and (relatively) minimal nail polish odor. I would recommend this product on polish-breaks between manicures. It is also a great all-purpose travel polish. This treatment was super beneficial for my natural nails. I had just removed my acrylic nails at home with a regular nail file and some acetone, so my nails were weak, dry, and a little brittle. After washing my hands after all the abrasive removal, I put on two layers of this treatment and then some cuticle oil after it dried. Not only are my nails shiny and healthy-looking, they also feel a lot stronger than before. My nails have always been a little weaker and textured, but I genuinely would not be able to see that with this treatment on. My nails are also significantly smoother than they were with all the filing I did. I also found the smell to be quite pleasant compared to normal nail polish and acetone, but maybe that was because I applied it after smelling acetone fumes for a couple hours. While I love it as a treatment, I cannot vouch for it as a base coat nor a top coat, This could be a good “primer” for a base coat, but it doesn’t seem sticky enough to be a good base coat that helps polish adhere to it. I also don’t think the texture is quite smooth or even enough to be a top coat which is meant to seal and even everything.grace.c

I have been learning how to do my own ombre nails and nail stamping. It can be a long process to apply the many different layers to achieve the look I want, and it is very frustrating to go through all that work only to smear the polish on a nail and have to start over. Enter Sally Insta Dri Top Coat. This awesome little gem is a nice consistency and goes on nicely – it's not too thin, yet doesn't gloop everywhere either. It leaves a nice shiny, clear color, and speeds the drying process. It also does not soak through the nail stamping sealer coat, so it doesn't smear the stamped designs. I have tried some expensive top coats that permeate through the layers of polish and ruin the nail stamping designs. The best part, this top coat protects my manicure! I wash dishes, cook, do laundry, type on a computer, shuffle papers around, and this top coat protects through it all! As any nail professional will tell you, you must touch up your manicure with a good top coat every few days if you want to prolong the life of your manicure. This Sally Insta Dri Top Coat is perfect for that, too. I just apply a quick top coat every other day before I leave for work in the morning and it is completely set by the time I arrive at the office. Perfect! This is my manicure after four days – and no, it is not gel (cure with a light) polish. I use regular (mostly Sally Hansen and Essie) nail polish.Iris

I have always been happy with Sally Hansen products, but this one was a HUGE let down. Instead of preventing chipping, it made my nail polish chip even faster. Just as a trial I put my nail polish on without this top coat, and guess what? It did not chip! So, there is a problem with this product. VERY disappointed!PM20

This is the opposite of a no-chip polish – it made my nails chip more! The instant dry top coat by sally hansen does a much better job and it dries quicker. I tested this during different weeks with different nail polishes and the result was always the same: more chips. Would get them even on the first day. Plus I got lots of bubbles with this.Charlotte

I felt compelled to navigate to this page and write this review on this product because I was extremely disappointed by it. I have several Sally Hansen products like the red insta dry, the nail hardner and others that I use regularly and that I love so this review is not to say that the entire brand is not good. I bought this product while I was on vacation because it claims to avoid the chips and cracks you usually have with other top coats. Unfortunately, I found that it performed worse, way worse than ordinary top coats or the other top coats from this brand. It looked beautiful during the first hours after it dried but it chipped and cracked within the first 16 hours of wearing it (I should have taken a picture of it but didn't think of it then). I will emphasize that I did nothing else other than watch Netflix, sleep and shower while this happened. Can't imagine what it would have looked like if I had washed the dishes! I noticed that the price of this one is much lower but that should not justify the very low quality of this product. I highly encourage Sally Hansen to thoroughly test their products before falsely advertising a "no chip" result.Vaness
