I am a big Minwax fan but am very disappointed in Minwax's Stainable Wood Filler. I've just used it for the first time to fill tiny open joints in a new oak tabletop. While working the product into the seams with a putty knife, the process made grinding sound as the putty knife worked it down, suggesting that the filler formula includes fine sand. After a bit of effort with the putty knife, the putty began to turn gray, suggesting that the sand, if it is there, was grinding metal dust off of the putty knife. The end result, until I realized what was happening, is gray stripes at the seams rather than stripes matching the wood color. The gray color is much more noticeable after the filler dries. Perhaps I worked the putty too much, but I didn't want a thin layer at the top of the seams to avoid later pop-outs. If my guess on source of the problem is correct, a warning on the product label would help others avoid my issue, perhaps suggesting not to overwork the filler (explaining why) and suggesting the use of plastic putty knife blades. And speaking of labels, the label on my 16 oz. tub looks to be copied directly from the smaller tubes in which the filler is sold, as it instructs the user to "squeeze a liberal amount … into the area to be filled." Squeezing the plastic tub won't accomplish the desired result. In the attached photo, the left side shows the filler on a scrap of oak as it comes from the tub and the right side shows the filler after about 15 seconds of troweling with a steel-bladed putty knife (a Rockler brand tool.)Tommmm

I have used Minwax products for many years and have always been satisfied with the excellent quality of their products. Minwax stainable wood filler is no exception. The filler is easy to apply with a putty knife, easy to sand to a smooth finish and the wood filler takes the Minwax penetrating stains very well. The only issue is getting the correct stain to match whatever wood your using. Sometimes I need to mix a few stains to get the best color match but Minwax products always work well. I am new to DIY so I look for products that has good review, reasonably priced and most specifically delivers. Minwax stainless wood filter fits in. I was trying to make a frame for a canvas I got online but since I am inexperienced, I made a lot of mistake in hammering my nails on the wood frame. It looked funny, if I were to do it again I but I do not have the resources. Then I remember about the minwax I have kept in the garage so I used it. I was concern because I have never used it before and it seemed like a grainy paste that might looked like too watery. I do not understand the process but after patching the gaps and holes I made as a mistake, I let it sat for an hours or so, came back and when it was dry I was happy to see that it's as if there was nothing in there except that it's obvious there were small circles from the hole. The putty applies very easily with your finger and the surrounding area can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The putty is smooth and easy to roll into a ball to put into a nail hole without making a mess and getting stuck to fingers. This wood putty is such a great product, especially for our house that is entirely wood floors with 2 small children running around all day. We often find dings or minor dents in the floor that need to be repaired, and this product makes that really simple. It is color matched to Miniwax wood floor stains, so we picked up some Mahogany wood putty and got to work. You simply put the in the hole, wipe away the excess putty and you’re all done. My floor installer left scratches, dents and nail holes in the woodwork. To repair these, I tried Minwax Color-Matched Wood Filler. The first store I went to, didn’t have the color I needed so I bought two tubes and tried to mix them. I was not successful. The stain I have on my woodwork is Honey Oak. I found Golden Oak at another store. It is real easy to put on. No sanding is needed, just a damp cloth after it sits for a few minutes. Because I have an old stain, it didn’t match very well. It looked ok on small nail holes, but the difference really showed up on dents and scratches. Because I like the ease of this product, I will get the stainable wood filler for the remaining repairs. I have found DAP Plastic Wood to be the best wood putty thus far. I prefer the mixture from the tube though. The consistency is better than that of the 16 oz. square tubs. The product in the square tub dries out way too quickly for my use. I have used the tube to repair dings and nicks in our siding and to fill the gaps where the sheets of siding meet. I am also able to form/sculpt a 'wood grain' finish in areas of the siding that required extensive sanding which removed the wood grain effect. My husband brought home a competing brand of wood filler in a tube, it cost more, performed poorly and was more like sawdust mixed with a bit of glue. It wouldn't even stick to anything.Lillie

I bought this at Rockler's recommendation to fill rotted-out holes on my deck. I pre-treated each area with J-B Weld liquid hardener. The Repair Putty mixed up easily and was easy to work with, though it hardened very quickly. The result is a rock-hard repair that should be easy to paint or stain when I'm ready to do it.Richard

I'm never going back to water based filler. This filler is less expensive than the equivalent Minwax product and works just as well. What I like most about this is that you can deep fill and sand it in 30 minutes. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5? The container suffers from the same phenomenon as a bag of potato chips and there is just as much air in the container as product. Maybe there's a scientific reason for this but I was disappointed when I opened the can and it was only half full of product.Zoro

Gorilla High Performace Wood Filler is a top notch product. I recently purchased some to fix a wood door that had several cracks in it. The wood filler went on smooth and sanded down nicely. I stained over it and could not tell any difference between the filler and real wood. Since it worked so well on repairing my door, I have been using it on other projects in my wood shop. Perfect to hold screws into a hole that may be a little bit too big. We used it to cover screw heads on a coffee table. It's pretty smooth so didn't need to sand paper it after before painting. First, it was almost impossible to get any out of the tube because it's too thick. Says on tube that it's "easy to spread and smooth finish". NOT! It's very dry and grainy and just falls apart! Bought this to fill some low spots and cracks in my dog's raised food bowl stand. It went on really well. I like how the color changes to know when it is dry. I hate how it basically turns to powder when you touch it after it is dry. It sanded nice and smooth and just crumbled when I touched it with my fingernail to see if it was hard. I bought product to repair wood that had been weather damaged. Cleaned all damaged away and had clean dry surface. Applied wood filler and left overnight and the next day, I could easily just scape it off like soft clay. Put a small amount of filler in a small container, added hardener, mixed and fould that it never changed, just stayed soft. I have used Bondo in the and will again. No more Minwax.Charlescmanfd

I own a handyman business and was actually looking on the site to get a spec on how cold the temp can be to use this on an exterior door jam repair. I saw some bad reviews and decided to do one myself. I have had great success with this product in numerous situations. If you don't mix it right, it will not work. I had to get used to it and once I did, it has been a life saver for many of my customers. I even used it to repair brick that had a light base screwed into it that spawled and broke the brick. I used a hearty serving if Minwax HP wood filler and let it dry overnight. I was able to drill and screw new screws into it and it still is solid 4 years later. Love it! Again, please advise on cold temp usage for exterior door jam repair. Thanks!Jim C

I’ve used this filler for years and it excels in specific applications. From large patches to scratch fixes this filler is durable under tough conditions. Simple scratch and gouge fixes are easy to do but you need to be very careful with the amount you prepare. The hardener is supposed to be added at a ratio of 16:1 but it is hard to gauge. Instead, I use it sparingly because the worst thing that happens is that it takes longer to set. When you use too much, you don’t have a lot of working time and pressing it into scratches can leave a chunky texture at the end of the window. When you sand it, you want the surface smooth but not too smooth. A slightly textured surface holds onto finishes better. It also makes blending easier. If you do large fixes, it is better to fill the bulk of the voids with wood and then add the hardener as the topping that you can sculpt. Filling a large void with filler only takes too long and the repair is likely to crack. You should also get the liquid wood hardener to treat the surface you are tying into. Sealing up the grain will minimize the seasonal swelling (especially for exterior repairs) if the wood doesn’t swell, the patch will be very durable. I’ve used this filler for molding repairs on a historic building and as crack filler in woodwork. It doesn’t really like stain on the first coat but if you apply it heavy, you can get it to look reasonably well. Most of my applications are using paint or a solid stain as a coating. Once sealed, this repair will last. I have exterior repairs that have made it through multiple seasons without issue. Great product and workable during and after it sets. Clean up right away because this will stick to tools like glue and need to be sanded off. Be aware of your breathing, the smell is strong and the dust from sanding should not be inhaled.My2Cents

So – this product would have been great, if it was not messy. I thought it would work like a putty and not remain wet forever. It turns out that after a week, the black hole filler I purchased is still wet, like black shoe polish – and shows no intention of drying. I'm not sure why anyone would want to put black grease on a frame, because every time I touch it, it gets on my hands, and then is tracked around the house. This stuff has ruined four of my frames – I should have tested it on one. I have NEVER purchased such a bad product from Blick. Usually Blick has great products, and my only issue in the past has been damage during shipping, or shipping itself – and Blick has awesome customer service and has been able to solve my issues. This, I am afraid, has no solution. I can't get it off my frames – and the time and effort I originally spent framing my work is lost. I can't bring my work to the gallery and hang it, and I can't bring it to the art fair. So I have four pieces of artwork that I have lost money on. Save yourself two dollars and buy shoe polish instead. I bet this is the same stuff.C Jean

These fillers are a life saver so much of the time! Sometimes I have an above excellent frame, (maybe handed down to me and some real good "value") and yet one little scrape or scratch mark can ruin the integrity of what it is framing!
