This wood putty is such a great product, especially for our house that is entirely wood floors with 2 small children running around all day. There’s little to no prep involved, just stain and topcoat your project before applying and make sure it’s clean and dry. My floor installer left scratches, dents and nail holes in the woodwork. To repair these, I tried Minwax Color-Matched Wood Filler. The first store I went to, didn’t have the color I needed so I bought two tubes and tried to mix them. I was not successful. The stain I have on my woodwork is Honey Oak. I found Golden Oak at another store. It is real easy to put on. No sanding is needed, just a damp cloth after it sits for a few minutes. Because I have an old stain, it didn’t match very well. I am a big Minwax fan but am very disappointed in Minwax's Stainable Wood Filler. I've just used it for the first time to fill tiny open joints in a new oak tabletop. While working the product into the seams with a putty knife, the process made grinding sound as the putty knife worked it down, suggesting that the filler formula includes fine sand. After a bit of effort with the putty knife, the putty began to turn gray, suggesting that the sand, if it is there, was grinding metal dust off of the putty knife. The end result, until I realized what was happening, is gray stripes at the seams rather than stripes matching the wood color. The gray color is much more noticeable after the filler dries. Perhaps I worked the putty too much, but I didn't want a thin layer at the top of the seams to avoid later pop-outs. If my guess on source of the problem is correct, a warning on the product label would help others avoid my issue, perhaps suggesting not to overwork the filler (explaining why) and suggesting the use of plastic putty knife blades. And speaking of labels, the label on my 16 oz. tub looks to be copied directly from the smaller tubes in which the filler is sold, as it instructs the user to "squeeze a liberal amount … into the area to be filled." Squeezing the plastic tub won't accomplish the desired result. In the attached photo, the left side shows the filler on a scrap of oak as it comes from the tub and the right side shows the filler after about 15 seconds of troweling with a steel-bladed putty knife (a Rockler brand tool.)Tommmm
I have used Minwax products for many years and have always been satisfied with the excellent quality of their products. Minwax stainable wood filler is no exception. The filler is easy to apply with a putty knife, easy to sand to a smooth finish and the wood filler takes the Minwax penetrating stains very well. The only issue is getting the correct stain to match whatever wood your using. Sometimes I need to mix a few stains to get the best color match but Minwax products always work well. I am new to DIY so I look for products that has good review, reasonably priced and most specifically delivers. Minwax stainless wood filter fits in. I was trying to make a frame for a canvas I got online but since I am inexperienced, I made a lot of mistake in hammering my nails on the wood frame. I was concern because I have never used it before and it seemed like a grainy paste that might looked like too watery. First, it was almost impossible to get any out of the tube because it's too thick. Says on tube that it's "easy to spread and smooth finish". NOT! It's very dry and grainy and just falls apart! This is great wood putty. I am using it on plywood that will have a polyurea spray applied over the top. It doesn't seem to shrink like other puttys. And it cleans up with water. It hardens fast, not by drying, but, by chemical reaction, so you can come back and sand sooner. And when it hardens it is as the label says, "Rock Hard". A couple of things you have to be cautious. One, don't make too big of batches. This stuff goes off rather quickly. Two, when you make another batch use fresh water. Do not use your clean up water from the previous batch. The used water will active the fresh batch and will cause it to go off even quicker. I would definitely recommend and purchase it again. I have found DAP Plastic Wood to be the best wood putty thus far. I prefer the mixture from the tube though. The consistency is better than that of the 16 oz. square tubs. The product in the square tub dries out way too quickly for my use. I have used the tube to repair dings and nicks in our siding and to fill the gaps where the sheets of siding meet. I am also able to form/sculpt a 'wood grain' finish in areas of the siding that required extensive sanding which removed the wood grain effect. My husband brought home a competing brand of wood filler in a tube, it cost more, performed poorly and was more like sawdust mixed with a bit of glue. It wouldn't even stick to anything.Lillie
I m not a woodworker. I suck at spackle. Me and caulk hate each other.. I so wish I would've read some of the comments here, especially the feedback from DAP. It took me two cans of the product to finally figure out how to use it correctly. Small areas and slight pre mixing. BUT…My patch turned out beautiful!!!!! No one can tell the difference from the patch and the real wood. I did make the stain on the patch just a hair darker then blended it to match. Don't overwork the product. Try a practice piece first. Thank you DAP for a fabulous product. It saved my bacon. And my moms table. And me since I'm the one that dinged it up.

Wow , this Gorilla wood filler is so super easy to use. All you have to do is squirt some where you need it. Very easy to spread. It's permanent and Crack resistant. Perfect to hold screws into a hole that may be a little bit too big. We used it to cover screw heads on a coffee table. It's pretty smooth so didn't need to sand paper it after before painting. This will be what wood filler I purchase in the future for all my projects. Quality is great and super good value.Scootie

This fill putty is oil based as opposed to others which are water based. The result is a superior color match as well as superior longevity. The water based versions firm up much too fast in the plastic container. I've never had a problem with excess residue to its oil base. I find it wipes as clean as other brands.psr40

I received a sample of the DAP Plastic Wood All Purpose Wood Filler. I received the Natural Interior/Exterior color; however, I am told it comes in many colors. I used this product to fill a bunch of nail holes in solid oak baseboard and trim boards around the house, as the job just never got quite finished. (you know – the cobbler's son goes without shoes?) Well, my husband is a contractor. When my hubby saw me using the DAP I was scolded for not using one that was already open. It seems that this is his go-to product of choice. With that being said, let me say that I was VERY impressed with the ease of use, sandability, and stainability of DAP All Purpose Wood Filler. Sanding capabilities are phenomenal! I was very impressed. The only downside to this product is that once you open it, plan on using it all within a very short period of time. It does not store well. The cap that seals the top is NOT 100% air-tight, and the product DOES dry out. I was told they probably have 30-40 tubes of this stuff down at my husband's shop, and many of them are dried out and no longer usable. I think that is just the nature of the product, and I don't consider it a fault. Just plan accordingly when doing your job. I love this stuff. Obviously my husband loves it, and now that I know how easy it is to use, I can finish up all those little projects that seem to get done perfectly for everyone else, but never quite finished in my own house!
I'm filling some glue-lam beams that have separated between the plies slightly. Not structurally a problem, but more astetically an issue. The tubs and tubes are difficult to apply in my case, and the quick dry time makes it challenging to get into the groves (1/2 – 1 inch deep and 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide). I have tried loading the product up in a clean blank tube of caulk with good success, but loading it is a pain and messy. Would be great to offer this in a caulk tube where the tip size could be varied and it would help it get into deep grooves or cracks and could be used for longer fill scenarios. Do caulk tubes of this product exist?
