It never fails.. You’re decorating your Christmas tree (or the politically correct ‘Holiday Tree’) and you drop one of your glass ornaments or discover that it was crushed during storage last year. Whatever the case might be, don’t toss them! Preserve them to create a unique holiday decoration to hang on your walls or give as gifts. If you don’t have any broken ornaments and you’re not feeling particularly jolly this holiday season, I must say it’s kind of satisfying to crush an ornament underneath your boot.. for the sake of art of course! 😉
Small canvas (I used a 5”x7” canvas)
Acrylic paint (I used the appropriately named, Mistletoe)
Craft glitter (optional)
Paint brush or foam brush
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
To create a zig-zag border like I did you just need a piece of paper cut slightly small than the canvas itself and tape.
(1.) Cut a zig-zag pattern along the edges of the paper and tape down to the canvas. (2.) Paint the edges of your canvas and allow them to dry for 5-10 minutes. Paint a second coat and allow to dry. (3.) Paint the top edges of your canvas, brushing away from the center to keep paint from getting underneath the paper. Allow first coat to dry for 5-10 minutes. (4.) Brush a second coat on and immediately sprinkle glitter on the wet paint. Let canvas dry for 15-20 minutes. Remove paper and tap extra glitter off. If any paint seeped underneath your paper you can touch it up using white paint and a small paint brush.
If you don’t have an already broken ornament, follow these steps to safely break one for the project.
(5.) Remove the top cap from the ornament and set aside. (6.) Wrap ornament in wax paper or a plastic bag (this will prevent it from tearing through the bag). (7.) Place inside of another plastic bag and tie it shut. (8.) Put on a good pair of boots, place the bag with the ornament on the floor and give it a quick stomp.
Untie the bag and carefully unwrap the crushed ornament.
As long as you’re careful you can pick up the pieces by hand without cutting yourself, but to be on the safe side you can also use tweezers. Arrange pieces on the canvas (the bigger pieces work best) to resemble a sphere so it appears that the ornament exploded outwards.
Place the top cap of the ornament at the very top. Tie up the bag with any remaining pieces you didn’t use and discard. One by one, pick up a piece, place small dabs of glue on the bottom edges that will be touching the canvas and place back down. Repeat with remaining pieces and cap to the ornament.
Hang it up or gift it!
